فهم الفروق بين الجنسين في التحصيل الأكاديمي لدى طلبة الهندسة
Abstract
In recent years, a noticeable shift has occurred in academic performance, with females consistently outperforming males in mathematical engineering courses. To investigate the factors contributing to this trend, we conducted a comprehensive survey at a main university in UAE. Analyzing data from 431 engineering students, we found that the time spent studying outside the classroom plays a pivotal role, evidenced by a statistically significant p-value of 0.04, contributing to the gender-based performance disparity. Building upon these findings, we propose short-term solutions that instructors and universities can implement promptly to address this issue. This study underscores the importance of ongoing institution-level, student-focused research to identify and address gender-based performance differences, ultimately leading to the reduction of this educational gap. The findings also offer insights into the theoretical understanding of gendered academic engagement, particularly in emerging educational systems.

Arabic Abstract الملخص باللغة العربية
شهد الأداء الأكاديمي في السنوات الأخيرة تحولًا ملحوظًا، حيث تفوقت الطالبات بشكل مستمر على الطلاب في المقررات الهندسية ذات الطابع الرياضي. ولفهم العوامل التي تسهم في هذا الاتجاه، أجرينا مسحًا شاملًا في إحدى الجامعات الرئيسية في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة. ومن خلال تحليل بيانات 431 طالبًا وطالبة من طلبة الهندسة، تبيّن أن الوقت الذي يقضيه الطلبة في الدراسة خارج قاعة المحاضرة يلعب دورًا محوريًا، كما أظهر ذلك دلالة إحصائية عند قيمة ، مما يسهم في تفسير الفجوة في الأداء القائم على النوع الاجتماعي. واستنادًا إلى هذه النتائج، نقترح مجموعة من الحلول قصيرة المدى التي يمكن لأعضاء هيئة التدريس والجامعات تطبيقها بشكل فوري لمعالجة هذه القضية. وتؤكد هذه الدراسة على أهمية إجراء بحوث مستمرة على مستوى المؤسسات، تركز على الطلبة، من أجل تحديد الفروق في الأداء الأكاديمي بين الجنسين ومعالجتها، بما يسهم في تقليص هذه الفجوة التعليمية. كما توفر النتائج رؤى إضافية تسهم في الفهم النظري لمشاركة الطلبة الأكاديمية المرتبطة بالنوع الاجتماعي، لا سيما في الأنظمة التعليمية الناشئة.
