Abstract

The current study sought to determine Kuwait University academic staff’s implementation of Web 2.0 educational platforms into their teaching courses as well as identify how prepared they are in using them and the challenges surrounding them. The study also aimed to investigate the reasons for the disinclination of utilizing Web 2.0 educational platforms in their teaching. The findings may help decision-makers to overcome these challenges, particularly at Kuwait University, which has allocated a large amount of money and tireless human efforts to bringingcutting-edge technology into its classrooms. The study adopted a mixed method approach for achieving the objectives and answering the research questions. Tools were represented in the forms of a questionnaire and interview, and both were confirmed for validity and reliability. The results show that academic staff at Kuwait University agreed on the implementation of Web 2.0 educational platforms into their teaching courses; however, some challenges caused their willingness to implement these platforms to decline. The study additionally found that there were cultural, technical, and other reasons for the disinclination to use Web 2.0 educational platforms and that an administrative reason restrained some academic staff from implementing them in their courses. Recommendations were drawn based on the findings of the study.

Arabic Abstract الملخص باللغة العربية

سعت الدراسة الحالية إلى معرفة مدى جاهزية الهيئة الأكاديمية الأساسية والمساندة بجامعة الكويت لتوظيف منصات التعلُّم القائمة على تقنيات الجيل الثاني للويب (Web2.0) في مقرراتهم التدريسية، إلى جانب معرفة أوجه التوظيف والتحديات التي تحدق بها وتقصي أبرز المبررات التي أدت إلى إحجام البعض منهم عن توظيفها واستخدامها. وقد رمت هذه الدراسة إلى تبصير متخذي القرار بتلك التحديات والمعوقات وسبل تذليلها ورفع مستوى الإفادة من هذه التقنية التي تكلف مؤسسات التعليم العالي لا سيما جامعة الكويت الأموال الطائلة والجهود البشرية الحثيثة من أجل توظيف منصات التعلُّم القائمة على تقنيات الجيل الثاني للويب في التعليم. وتبنت هذه الدراسة المنهج الممزوج لتحقيق أهدافها والإجابة عن أسئلتها؛ وتم إعداد أداتين لذلك الغرض تمثلتا في الاستبانة والمقابلة الشخصية. وقد طُبقت الأداتين بعد التأكد من صدقهما وثباتهما على عينة عشوائية من أعضاء الهيئة الأكاديمية الأساسية والمساندة في جامعة الكويت والبالغ عددهم) 1413) وفقاً للعام الأكاديمي (2012/2013). وأسفرت الدراسة عن اتفاق أعضاء الهيئة الأكاديمية بجامعة الكويت على ضرورة توظيف منصات التعلُّم القائمة على تقنيات الجيل الثاني للويب في مقرراتهم التدريسية، كما كشفت النتائج عن وجود بعض التحديات التي تواجه الهيئة الأكاديمية وتحول دون توظيفهم لتلك المنصات على النحو الأمثل في مقرراتهم التدريسة، وكذلك عن أبرز المبررات الثقافية والفنية التي تقف وراء إحجامهم عنها. إلى جانب ذلك بينت النتائج أنه لا توجد هناك مبررات إدارية تحد من توظيفهم لمنصات التعلُّم القائمة على تقنيات الجيل الثاني للويب في مقرراتهم التدريسية. وقد تم رسم التوصيات الضرورية انطلاقاُ من ما توصلت إليه الدراسة من نتائج.
