Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the impact of the empowerment training programme (Tamkeen) on developing the competencies of the school principals of Cycle 2 under the umbrella of Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) in the City of Al-Ain. The study also provided the voice of the principals regarding improving the contents of Tamkeen programme. This study was an exploratory and incorporated interview as an approach to collecting the required data. The study sample of the participants (interviewees) consisted of seventeen principals. The interviews were conducted during the academic year of 2016/2017. The study proposed two research questions: i) what would be the possible impact of Tamkeen programme on developing competencies from the principals’ prespectives? and ii) what are the recommendations of the principals for improving the efficiency of Tamkeen? The responses to the first question indicated ten impacts of Tamkeen on the following competencies: the school environment, ability to make the right decision, practical assessment of teacher performance, ability in strategic planning, annual performance assessment, establishing mutual relationship between the principals and teachers, the students, parents, and scholarly education societies. The responses to the second question illustrated in the recommendations proposed by the principals; among these are: Increase the number of Tamkeen’s short training workshops,hiring resident expert trainers as school staff members,the training contents should be interesting and suitable to the teachers’ ability and answer the actual needs,the outsources of the workshop should include also trainers from the local community
