Abstract
This dissertation is about the application of the Tridiagonal Representation Approach (TRA) in handling linear phenomenons, and for the first time, the J-matrix method of scattering in handling nonlinear phenomenons. The TRA is an algebraic method for solving linear ordinary differential equations of the second order. The advantage of the method in being algebraic is reinforced by the analytic power of orthogonal polynomials and special functions. On the computational side, it is favored as being reliant on powerful numerical techniques that deal with tridiagonal matrices such as Gauss quadrature and continued fraction. In the method, the solution of the differential equation (e.g., Schrödinger equation) is written as a convergent series (finite or infinite) in terms of a complete set of square integrable functions (basis). This set is chosen such that the matrix representation of the differential operator is tridiagonal. Consequently, the differential equation becomes a three-term recursion relation for the expansion coefficients of the series. The recursion is then solved in terms of orthogonal polynomials in the space of parameters of the differential equation (e.g., the energy and potential parameters). If the differential equation is the equation of motion in physics, then all physical properties of the solution (e.g., energy spectrum, scattering phase shift, density of states, etc.) are obtained from the properties of these polynomials (e.g., their weight function, generating function, zeros, asymptotics, etc.). On the other hand, the J-matrix (Jacobi-matrix) theory of scattering is also an algebraic method which exploits the fact that the unperturbed (reference) Hamiltonian can be diagonalized in a certain complete set of square integrable basis functions. This basis set is chosen such that the matrix representation of the reference Hamiltonian is tridiagonal. This requirement results in a three-term recurrence relation for the expansion coefficient of the wavefunction associated with the reference Hamiltonian; and hence establishes a strong relationship between the solution of the reference problem and the corresponding orthogonal polynomials. This also allows for an exact analytic diagonalization of the reference Hamiltonian and expresses the wavefunction of the reference problem as an infinite convergent series with expansion coefficients that are written in terms of orthogonal polynomials. The scattering potential is assumed to be non –singular and short-range. Hence its representation can be truncated in a finite subset of the basis set. The accuracy of the computations can be improved and the errors can be made small by (1) a proper choice of value for the scaling parameter in the basis and (2) enlarging the size of the basis set used in the truncated space where the potential is evaluated. Hence, the J-matrix differs from the algebraic variational theories in that the reference part of the Hamiltonian is accounted for in full and treated analytically whereas only the short-range scattering potential is approximated in a well-defined and controllable manner. This linear J matrix method has been used extensively in relativistic and nonrelativistic scattering problems in atomic, molecular, and nuclear physics for decades with interesting results. Now, as further application, in chapter 3, we used the TRA to obtain new confined linear systems with a linear energy spectrum. We provided multiple 1D examples and one 3D example to demonstrate the process. We plotted a few wavefunctions of the lowest energy bound states in addition to providing a graphical depiction of the potential function for each confined system. In chapter 4, we treat the inverse problem where for a given choice of the energy spectrum formula E(z²) and a particular collection of basis functions in configuration space {φₙ(x)}, we provide a general technique for constructing a class of quantum systems associated with the three-parameter continuous dual Hahn orthogonal polynomials Sₙᵘ(z²;a,b). The energy spectrum, the scattering phase shift, and the wavefunction are obtained analytically. However, the corresponding potential function can only be derived numerically and locally for a given set of physical parameters. By choosing the energy as a special function of the polynomial argument E(z²) in chapter 5 and 6 and for the first time in the published literature, we introduce a nonlinear extension of the J-matrix method of scattering. This formulation relies heavily on the linearization formulas for products of orthogonal polynomials. The nonlinear J matrix method (semi analytic) was presented to handle nonlinear Schrodinger equation using a simple toy model in chapter 5 whereas in chapter 6, a perturbative formulation of nonlinear J matrix method in 2D for the NLSE. All results obtained in all cases are new and interesting and they have been published. In the future, as a further research plan, we intend to develop the nonlinear tridiagonal representation approach and the time-dependent tridiagonal representation approach.
