Abstract
This dissertation focused on exploring the subjective complaints of cognition problems among the United Arab Emirates (UAE) population using a validated and adapted Arabic Emirati language version of a subjective scale that assesses cognition problems, -The Subjective Scale to Investigate Cognition - Emirates (SSTIC-E). Cognitive complaints and lack of cognitive insights are not specific to schizophrenia. It could be related to depression, mild cognitive impairment, dementia, or Alzheimer's. Hence, scales in this field can be very useful to assess and collect data for populations at risk of developing cognitive decline. The study aims to translate, adapt, and validate the SSTICS in the Emirates population. The main objectives of the study are as follows: 1. To translate the SSTICS in the Emirates population into the traditional Arabic Emirati language version (SSTIC-E). 2. To provide an easy screening tool in Arabic (SSTIC-E), for the UAE population that helps in reflecting subjective complaints for cognition domains among clinical and healthy control subjects. 3. To investigate the relation between the subjective and objective cognitive domains using SSTIC-E and MoCA. In the methodology, we conducted a cross-sectional study to develop the Subjective Scale to Investigate Cognition in the Emirates Population (SSTIC-E) based on the original SSTICS scale. Then we applied the STTIC-E among a convenient sample of 210 participants, along with the MoCA tool and the sociodemographic questionnaire. We entered the data in the SPSS program and conducted descriptive analysis and factor analysis (FA). As a result, the Arabic version of the SSTIC-E was administered to a total of 210 participants, including 126 patients and 84 healthy control participants. Study findings revealed that the patient group scored significantly higher mean scores in all the SSTIC-E domains in comparison to the control group (P < 0.001), where they scored (34, SD = 15.19), while the control group scored (23, SD = 12.04), which indicate worse cognitive functioning among the patient group, except for the language domain no significant differences were found between the two groups (P = 0.07). Furthermore, the patient group had significantly lower mean scores in all the domains of the MoCA test in comparison with the control group (P < 0.001) where they scored (23, SD = 4.58) and the control group scored (27, SD = 2.24). However, no significant difference was observed in the abstraction (P = 0.64) and naming (P = 0.08) domains between both groups. In conclusion, our study is the first UAE study to translate, modify, and validate SSTIC-E for clinical and nonclinical populations. Furthermore, our study recommendation is to use the SSTIC-E as an easy screening tool to assess individual cognitive problems. Additionally, SSTIC-E provided a better understanding of cognitive differences between populations for better-tailored treatments and further cognitive assessment tools refinement. Any community needs to provide a culturally adapted and validated psychometric instrument, that will fit their needs in all aspects of religion, culture, and language, to decrease the problem burden in this community. Hence, the pursuit of a meta-cognitive model is challenging but important, as it can identify instances where subjective measures reveal cognitive deficits that individuals are unaware of. This identification can facilitate the recognition of cognitive problems and the implementation of interventions to prevent further decline, particularly among populations at risk.
