Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a major and growing health challenge, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) provides high-resolution time-series data that capture detailed glucose fluctuations over time. However, conventional CGM summary measures, such as mean glucose, standard deviation, and time-in-range, may not fully describe the nonlinear temporal structure of glucose dynamics.

This thesis investigates nonlinear dynamical approaches for analyzing CGM time series, with a focus on recurrence-based analysis and ordinal-network analysis. Recurrence-based methods, including recurrence quantification analysis (RQA), are used to characterize geometric and temporal patterns in reconstructed phase space, while ordinal networks are used to represent local temporal-ordering and transition structures. Features extracted from these methods are then analyzed using unsupervised clustering at both daily and patient levels.

The results show that nonlinear dynamical features provide useful information beyond standard CGM metrics. Recurrence-based analysis produced the strongest findings, detecting both persistent abnormal glucose profiles and intermittent abnormal daily regimes. Ordinal-network analysis also identified rare symbolic transition patterns and provided a complementary perspective on glucose dynamics.

Overall, the findings suggest that nonlinear time-series methods can reveal atypical glucose behavior that may not be apparent from conventional statistical summaries alone. This thesis demonstrates the potential of recurrence-based and ordinal-network representations as complementary tools for characterizing glucose regulation and detecting abnormal dynamical patterns in CGM data.
