Abstract
The traditional residential neighborhoods represent the tangible memory of peoples' history, so they must be preserved and sustainable. Al Riyadh city has witnessed rapid urban development, which leads the government to preserve its heritage by developing the historic center ‘’Diriyah’’ and its surroundings over ‘’Wadi Hanifa’’, which includes setting environmental and social sustainability standards to ensure the continuity and prosperity of that region. The problem of the research lies in identifying the sources of environmental and social sustainability indicators and the mechanism of eliciting local ones by identifying the components of the traditional neighborhoods as well as the environmental and social conditions in the study area and standing at the variables that affect the selection of the indicators throughout literature, and by meeting personalities who lived through the traditional and modern eras to identify the most prominent features of traditional architecture and make it direct the design of the surrounding in a sustainable manner. The paper concluded that the local sustainability indicators have social, environmental, and heritage dimensions, s, and accessing their needs mechanism depends on international and local indicators and Sharia sources. These indicators are subject to human, urban and local climatic variables.
