Abstract
Climate change is driving simultaneous increases in atmospheric CO₂, surface UV-B radiation, and temperature, yet most crop research has examined these stressors in isolation, leaving their combined effect on nutritional quality poorly understood. Quinoa (Chenopodium Quinoa Wild.), a stress-tolerant C3 pseudocereal, has been promoted as a climate-resilient forage and food crop for arid regions, but its performance under realistic multi-stress conditions remains uncertain. This study therefore asked whether quinoa can maintain biomass, yield, and mineral quality when exposed to elevated CO₂, enhanced UV-B, and rising temperature individually and in combination, and whether their interaction is additive or non-additive.
To address this, an Open Top Chamber experiment was conducted at Al-Foah Experimental Farm, UAEU, with plants grown in soil-filled tubes under standard irrigation and fertilisation. Treatments comprised elevated CO₂ (700 ppm), elevated temperature (29 °C), and enhanced UV-B radiation (9.5 kJ d⁻¹ m⁻² at 280–320 nm), applied singly and combined, with five replicates each. Morphological traits, photosynthetic pigments, proline, phenolics, and certified macro- and micronutrient profiles were measured.
Elevated CO₂ produced the highest shoot biomass, total chlorophyll, and grain yield, and increased phosphorus and potassium, but reduced iron (≈28 %) and copper (≈34 %), consistent with nutrient dilution in C3 crops. UV-B caused the greatest reductions in biomass, chlorophyll, and grain yield, and together with high temperature lowered magnesium and manganese, elements central to chlorophyll and photosystem II. Stress treatments raised proline and phenolics, indicating active osmotic and antioxidant defence, while combined-stress responses were non-additive, reflecting genuine interaction among the three drivers. Seed protein declined under all stress treatments and was lowest under combined stress, whereas trace and heavy-element concentrations remained below safety thresholds throughout.
Overall, quinoa retained strong resilience and productivity under the three drivers, supporting its potential as a climate-smart forage crop, though the concurrent decline in Fe, Cu, and protein indicates a nutritional trade-off requiring targeted micronutrient management. These conclusions are constrained by the controlled OTC environment and single-season timeframe, which may not fully capture long-term acclimation or fieldscale variability, warranting multi-season field validation.
