Abstract
The purpose of this research is to explore the spectral behavior of sea ice and to understand how Arctic sea ice surfaces appear when they are observed with a hyperspectral sensor. This is crucial because sea ice changes a lot during the melt season, and different surface types can sometimes look similar to a human eye, but physically they are different. It is thus essential to identify the spectral differences between these surfaces. The main objective of this study is to examine how the spectra of white ice and melt ponds change when their physical and optical properties are varied, and to see how much the atmosphere changes their signal before it reaches the sensor. This work was carried out to develop physics-based SCIATRAN simulations that support the interpretation of future hyperspectral observations from the Earth observation mission Arab Satellite 813 and similar hyperspectral missions. To do this, the radiative transfer model SCIATRAN was used to generate spectra under controlled conditions. For white ice, the simulations varied optical thickness, chord length, and yellow substance absorption. For melt ponds, the simulations varied water depth, under-pond ice thickness, and transport-scattering coefficient. A second set of melt pond simulations was also produced to represent atmospherically corrected conditions, so that the role of the atmosphere could be seen more clearly. The results showed that white ice and melt ponds have clear spectral differences. White ice was generally brighter and kept more spectral structure into the infrared, while melt ponds were darker and more absorption-dominated. The results also showed that atmospheric effects can change the signal quite a lot, especially for dark melt ponds, whose signal is relatively weak. Overall, the main contribution of this thesis is that it used a physics-based approach and provided a collection of spectra that can help with the future interpretation of the Arab Satellite 813 hyperspectral observations over Arctic sea ice.
